Ex-Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, baulked by Selangor from going on the talk circuit, was headed for a similar bar in Penang but for the intervention of state minister of religion Abdul Malik Abul Kassim.
Asri's 'kuliah maghrib' at Masjid Jemik in Jelutong tonight will proceed as planned, said Malek to Malaysiakini.
Malik is the state executive councillor for religion, domestic trade and consumer affairs.
He said speculation that Asri was being barred from Penang stemmed from an inquiry by the Pegawai Agama Daerah Timor Laut in Penang island over an invitation to ex-mufti issued by the mosque committee at Masjid Jemik.
Lack of paper qualifications
Malik said the inquiry by the officer, who is responsible to Jakim, led to speculation that Penang ought to follow Selangor in barring the way to Asri's talks considered risqué because of action by the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department over the preacher's alleged lack of paper qualifications.
“That was speculation and not an actual decision to bar him,” said Malik.
“He's on schedule to preach [today],” said Malik. “Insyaallah, I will be there to hear him,” he added.
“In fact I've read some of his preaching and liked what I saw,” Malik remarked.
