PENANG, April 12 (Bernama) -- Eight policemen from the Patrol Cars Unit (MPV Elite) of the Penang Police Contingent here received commendation certificates for their success in combating drug trafficking in the first three months of this year.
Penang police chief Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said the MPV Elite squad led by Chief Insp Rohizad Halim crippled four drug syndicates in the state.
"They made several arrests, including foreign nationals, found to be involved in distributing ecstasy pills, psychotropic drugs, heroin and cannabis," he told reporters here on Monday.
He said the team also paralysed a luxury car theft syndicate with the arrest of two suspects.
Ayub said the state crime rate reduced by 17.4 per cent crime rate but it was still below the 20 per cent mark.
He named Jalan Pattani, Pulau Tikus, Bayan Lepas, Butterworth, Bukit Tengah, Bukit Mertajam, Mak Mandin, Sungai Bakap, Jelutong and the Central Police Station area as crime hot spots in the state.
